Menus fail to work in Audacity 3.4.2 upon making 2rd recording

Running Linux Mint Mate. Audacity records a very short file. I close the file without saving and make another recording. This time the menus are not working. My work around is to then open a text editor (XED) file on the desktop and then the menus function again. Sometimes just waiting 2 minutes will sort it. I am for the first time experiencing disappearing taskbar problems and running suggested AI commands from the terminal will sort the problem but then this problem reoccurs .
