UnsafelyDisableChecksum patch still neccessary?

Description
Commit f5d8961 introduced a patch which (seemingly) disables checksum verification. For me, this sounds like something we do not want to keep disabled permanently if its somehow avoidable. Therefore, I wonder if this is still necessary by today?
