Firebase authentication error

**Describe the bug**
I am following the Codelab instructions for a friendly chat app . When i do firebase login , the link shown in terminal opens a page where it shows:
Authorization Error
Error 400: invalid_request
Required parameter is missing: response_type

This is the message i get and thus i can't do the further steps.
