# Project Summary

## Impact

Africa is producing significant amounts of real-world data through solar energy, agriculture, logistics, climate monitoring, and other emerging DePIN and RWA applications. Yet much of this data is currently stored on centralized platforms such as Google Drive, AWS, and other cloud providers. At the same time, many African developers have limited practical experience with Filecoin, IPFS, and decentralized storage because they lack accessible, hands-on programmes that take them from learning to deploying real applications. This creates a dual gap: African builders lack decentralized infrastructure skills, while Filecoin misses an opportunity to become the storage layer for Africa's growing data economy.

Data For Africa—Filecoin Build Sprint directly addresses this gap by turning developer education into real ecosystem adoption. Within one month, we will train 30 African founders and builders, support the launch of 5 real-world applications using Filecoin, and store **100GB+ of African data on the network**. The projects will focus on practical use cases such as DePIN, agriculture, renewable energy, logistics, and climate data. This demonstrates that Filecoin can support real African use cases while giving participating builders practical experience they can continue applying to future projects.

Our success metrics are simple and measurable: 30 builders trained, 5 Filecoin-powered applications launched, and 100GB+ of real-world data stored on Filecoin. All project code, documentation, and lessons learned will be published openly so that other developers can replicate the integrations and build on the work. The two strongest teams will receive $1,000 each in launch support to continue developing their products after the sprint. Over time, this creates a repeatable model for onboarding developers, generating storage demand, and expanding Filecoin adoption across additional African markets.

## Outcomes

Milestone 1 — Train & Prototype

Timeline: Days 1–14
Goal: Onboard 30 African developers and move them from learning to building.

Train 30 founders/developers on IPFS, Filecoin, Web3.Storage, Lighthouse, and FVM.
Form 10 project teams and develop working prototypes.
Each prototype demonstrates uploading and storing data through decentralized infrastructure.
Target: 30 developers trained and 10 prototypes completed.
Evidence: Attendance records, certificates, GitHub repositories, and prototype demos.

Milestone 2 — Launch & Store Real Data

Timeline: Days 14–26
Goal: Turn prototypes into real Filecoin applications and generate measurable storage demand.

Launch 5 public, open-source Filecoin applications focused on real-world use cases such as energy, agriculture, logistics, and climate.
Store 100GB+ of real African data on Filecoin.
Publish all project code, documentation, and tutorials through a public GitHub organization.

## Adoption, Reach, and Growth Strategies

### Target Audience

Our primary audience is African founders, developers, and technical builders working on real-world applications in DePIN, RWA, agriculture, renewable energy, logistics, climate, and data infrastructure. We are initially targeting 30 founders for the first sprint, with the broader opportunity extending to thousands of African developers and startup teams across major technology communities.

We will reach this audience through our existing developer and technology communities, partner networks, social media, universities, startup ecosystems, and Web3 communities. Our approach is designed to attract builders who already have a real product or data problem and need decentralized storage infrastructure to move from prototype to production.

## 1. Adoption
We will turn 30 Founders into Long-Term Filecoin Builders

Our priority is ensuring that participants continue using Filecoin after the sprint rather than treating the programme as a one-time training event.

* $2,000 Follow-on Grants: Two of the strongest teams will receive $1,000 each to continue developing their Filecoin-powered applications for at least three additional months.
* Mentorship & Office Hours: We will provide two Filecoin-focused office hours each month for three months, helping teams with storage architecture, PDPs, retrieval, scaling, and production deployment.
* Continued Ecosystem Support: We will connect promising teams with relevant Filecoin grants, retrieval programmes, DePIN opportunities, and other ecosystem resources.
* Integration Requirement: Every selected team must demonstrate actual Filecoin storage in its application, ensuring participants gain practical experience rather than only theoretical knowledge.

## 2. Reach
We will make the projects useful to the next 100 builders

The programme will make its outputs publicly reusable so that developers who are not part of the sprint can benefit from the work.

* Open-Source Templates: All 5 applications will be published with source code, documentation, tutorials, and deployment guides. Developers will be able to use these as starting points for their own Filecoin applications.
* Public Demo Day: We will showcase all 5 projects to at least **70 attendees**, including developers, founders, ecosystem participants, students, and technology communities.
* Content Distribution: We will publish project demos, technical tutorials, founder stories, and lessons learned through GitHub, LinkedIn, X/Twitter, YouTube, and community channels.
* First 10 Users: During the sprint, each project team will identify at least two early users, data providers, or partner organizations to test the application, giving the first 10 users a direct role in validating the products.
* First 100 Users: After Demo Day, teams will use their open-source products, community outreach, partnerships, and referrals to expand adoption toward 100 combined users or participating data contributors across the 5 projects.

## 3. Growth
Build a Repeatable Pipeline for More Builders and More Data

The sprint is designed as a repeatable model rather than a one-time event.

* Quarterly Build Sprints: We will use the first sprint as a playbook for future programmes. Each subsequent sprint can target approximately 30 new developers, new Filecoin applications, and additional real-world data.
* Train-the-Trainer: The strongest participants from each cohort will be encouraged to become mentors for future cohorts, reducing onboarding costs while creating a growing network of Filecoin-capable African builders.
* Real-World Data Flywheel: As participating applications gain users, they will generate and store more data. This creates ongoing Filecoin storage demand and provides real-world evidence that other African founders can learn from.
* Open Ecosystem Resources: Every cohort will contribute new code, templates, documentation, case studies, and technical lessons that make it easier for the next generation of developers to adopt Filecoin.

## Our Growth Model

We are building a simple pipeline:

Objective

Build practical Filecoin knowledge among 30 African founders and move participants from learning to their first working decentralized-storage prototypes.

Activities & Functionality

During the first two weeks, participants will complete hands-on technical sessions covering:

IPFS fundamentals and content addressing
Filecoin storage concepts and data onboarding
Web3.Storage and Lighthouse
Programmable Data Products (PDPs)
Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM)
Connecting applications to decentralized storage
Uploading, retrieving, and verifying data using CIDs

Participants will then form 10 project teams around real-world use cases including renewable energy, agriculture, logistics, climate, and other data-intensive applications.

By the end of this milestone, every team will have a working prototype capable of uploading data to IPFS and demonstrating a Filecoin storage workflow.

Convert the strongest prototypes into real, publicly accessible applications that generate measurable Filecoin storage demand.

Activities & Functionality

The 10 teams will enter an intensive build and mentorship phase. Technical mentors will help teams improve their architecture, integrate Filecoin infrastructure, test storage and retrieval workflows, and prepare their applications for public launch.

From the 10 prototypes, 5 teams will be selected to launch public MVPs based on technical readiness, real-world relevance, data requirements, and potential for continued Filecoin usage.

Each selected application will:

Have a functional public MVP
Integrate IPFS/Filecoin storage
Upload real-world data
Provide a way for users to access or verify stored data
Generate verifiable CIDs and storage records
Have publicly accessible source code and documentation

Together, the 5 applications will onboard 100GB+ of real African data to the Filecoin ecosystem.

## Maintenance and Upgrade Plans

After the 30-day sprint, our team will continue supporting the participating projects through **monthly technical office hours for at least three months**, helping teams maintain their Filecoin integrations, troubleshoot storage and retrieval issues, and adopt relevant Filecoin infrastructure upgrades.

The 5 project teams will remain responsible for maintaining their applications and repositories, while our technical mentors will provide guidance on updates to Filecoin, IPFS, PDPs, Lighthouse, and related tooling. We will also monitor storage activity and encourage teams to continue onboarding real-world data as their applications gain users.

All code, documentation, tutorials, and technical lessons will remain publicly available on GitHub so other African developers can reuse and improve the work. The strongest teams will receive follow-on support and be connected to relevant Filecoin ecosystem opportunities.

In the longer term, we plan to run quarterly build sprints using the programme's open-source materials and lessons learned. Previous participants will be invited to become mentors, creating a growing community capable of maintaining projects, onboarding new builders, and expanding Filecoin-based data applications across Africa.

Within 30 days, we aim to train 30 African builders, develop 10 prototypes, launch 5 open-source Filecoin applications, and onboard 100GB+ of real-world African data. All code, documentation, tutorials, and lessons learned will be publicly available so that developers outside the cohort can replicate the work.

We believe Africa represents a significant opportunity for Filecoin because of its rapidly growing activity in areas such as renewable energy, agriculture, logistics, climate technology, and other data-intensive sectors. This programme provides a practical mechanism for converting that activity into Filecoin adoption by equipping local builders with the skills and tools needed to build on the network.

The first sprint will also serve as a tested blueprint for future cohorts. By developing open-source resources, creating experienced mentors, and documenting successful use cases, we can progressively reduce the barriers for additional African developers and organizations to adopt Filecoin.
