Just to give context to my comment: I have a structural engineering masters degree and doing web development mainly with Ruby and sometimes with JS.

I just finished this book and found it awesome. It is written in Python so it's way easier to read and understand if you are not familiar with Java. If you have no CS degree this is the book to start learning algorithms and basic data structures from.

Don't you know a book that compares Ruby with Javascript and maybe with Python?
