Mayavi 4.5.0 hangs on Python 2.7.12 on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

Hi, I installed Mayavi 4.5.0 from pip and ran the demo code in the Mayavi website. Unfortunately, my Python console hangs. I am running Python through Spyder. I tried running the same in Spyder through Conda installation in Windows 10, and it works fine. But I would much rather work in Ubuntu 16.04 environment and, preferrably outside Conda installation. I can't figure out why it is hanging indefinitely. In Ipython, it gives the error: Kernel died, restarting.
