Suggested improvements for a more user-friendly Element client experience

Matrix already provides a powerful and privacy-respecting foundation for communication. However, a few small usability and accessibility improvements could make the experience much more approachable for everyday users — without compromising its decentralized nature.

1. Local user aliases

- Add the ability to rename users locally (per account).

When contacts use random Matrix IDs or multiple accounts, conversations can become confusing. Local aliases make chats clearer and more personal, improving usability without affecting federation or privacy.

2. Customizable chat backgrounds

- Allow users to set custom chat backgrounds — either globally or per room.

This visual customization helps users feel more at home, especially for those transitioning from mainstream apps like Telegram or WhatsApp. It’s a small touch that has a big impact on comfort and adoption.

3. Enhanced voice message UX

- Improve audio messaging with familiar features:

- Press and hold to record; release to send

- Swipe up to lock recording (hands-free mode)

- Playback speed control (0.5× / 1× / 1.5× / 2×)

These refinements would align the user experience with modern expectations, making Matrix clients more intuitive for newcomers.

4. Device management and session visibility

- Add a clear interface to view and manage verified devices and active sessions directly within the mobile app.

Currently, many users who rely only on mobile clients have no practical way to check or revoke logged-in sessions. This is a significant privacy and security limitation.
Improving session visibility would increase trust, transparency, and user confidence — all critical for a platform centered on secure communication.

I care deeply about this because I want to help more people adopt decentralized communication tools and make the web safer and more independent.
The biggest challenge I face when introducing Matrix apps like Element or SchildiChat to friends and family is that they still feel less friendly and intuitive compared to traditional messaging platforms.

Making the interface more personal, accessible, and privacy-transparent would lower that barrier and help Matrix reach the wider audience it deserves.
