Research direction

Reproduce the issue in Element Web by opening All Settings, uploading the linked image through the profile-picture pencil, and observing its rotation and cropping. Compare the result with the image's provided orientation and the expected ability to crop or reposition it; done means the upload preserves orientation and supports the requested adjustment.
