Description
(This issue was created before the "Unread first" view existed. Its description has been updated to reflect the remaining desires that I have, since that view helps a lot (thanks!))
Whenever I switch to the Element Web window, I want to deal with the messages I see, most-important first. I have marked some rooms as Favourites to indicate that they are more important.
When I choose the "Unread first" sort order on the room list it is ordered into groups: Invites, Calls, Mentions, Notifs, Activity, None, Low Priority, Mute.
Often, I have no mentions, notifications etc. so the whole room list is just the Activity group + stuff I don't care about.
Within the Activity section, the rooms are not currently sorted in order of importance, meaning I might not see that someone has said something in a Favourite room, because it is scrolled off the bottom.
I would like rooms to be sorted _within_ each group, preferably in this order:
* people
* favourites
* other rooms
I think this applies to all groups up to and including Activity.
I don't care about later groups, but I strongly suspect people who use them don't want to have to scroll past all the people before they see their favourites, so I would suggest that for later groups the correct order is favourites, rooms, people.
### Old description
#### What?
I love how the new room list looks, and the filters are much better for me than sections.
But, instead of seeing rooms in activity order, I would like to see them in order of importance to me. Messages directed at me personally are the most important.
#### Why?
Whenever I switch to the Element Web window, I want to deal with the messages I see, most-important first.
So it makes sense to me that the room list would show them in this order.
Otherwise, I need to scroll through the room list looking for important events, which takes much longer and leaves me worried that I missed something.
#### How would you like to achieve it?
I would like the option to order the room list with the most important messages at the top.
Here is my personal list of types of room list item, in order of importance (most important first):
* invites
* mentions
* notifications (people, then favourites, then rooms, then low-pri)
* with-activity (i.e. "dot") (people, then favourites, then rooms, then low-pri)
* other (favourites, then rooms, then people, then low-pri)
Most of the time, I only have with-activity rooms. In that situation it is really important to me that favourites with activity are at the top of the list, so I can quickly check what has happened in the rooms I really care about.
### Have you considered any alternatives?
I think the alternative for very-important things is to scan through the entire room list looking for invites, mentions and notifications.
Then, once I've done that, I could switch to Favourites view to see what is happening there, but again I would need to scan through looking for rooms with activity.
