Because the room list doesn't show a timeline, the read receipt for the user isn't sent. This is further problematic due to the room list's introduction of notification handling which will ignore left rooms by default, thus not updating the count even if it did get a read receipt. This is further worsened by the room being encrypted, thus the push rules are executed client-side
