Can't join #whatsapp:maunium.net using link

**Describe the bug**
As I tried to join the channel `#whatsapp:maunium.net`, I found myself in a channel on `matrix.org` that uses the intended channel name, as to direct the users to their actual destination. Someone helpful at the `matrix.org` channel posted the address as `#whatsapp:maunium.net`, and informed the users they can join the intended channel by clicking the linking. on iOS this gives the following error: "rejoining empty room currently not possible", while it works from the web.

**To Reproduce**
Steps to reproduce the behavior:
1. Search for `#whatsapp:maunium.net`.
2. Join the channel (Assert it belongs to `matrix.org`).
3. Find the posted link for `#whatsapp:maunium.net`.
4. Click (tap).
5. See error.

**Expected behavior**
Join without error.
