`@`'s disappear whilst typing rest of message

### Steps to reproduce

Whenever I am typing a message and try to `@` someone, the tagging disappears and turns into their username, in plaintext, without the `@` after a few words. [Here is a link to a recording showing this](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mCnbMosxj9x0SoMpP8PTtTcPKSBPYlka/view?usp=sharing).
