Update react, vscode-messenger, and other dependencies

* We should update react dependencies as part of an overall refresh of dependencies.
Slightly more effort is expected due to major version updates of the components.

* Additionally, the vscode-messenger parts should be updated. Note that a first attempt failed though, hence needs a bit of debugging.

* Also, xmlbuilder2 wasn't straight forward to update. Another one to update with a bit more of focus.

Should not block releases, but catching up rather sooner than later would be beneficial.
