> I believe a one should _lead by example_ and in an economy which is quickly shifting with technology, the ability to **"quickly master hard things"** and **"produce at an elite level, in terms of both quality and speed"** (as quoted from Cal Newport in ['Deep Work'](https://amzn.to/2zmkBal)) becomes critical.
We have all long since heard how it is impossible to be doing great work and constantly multi-tasking but for a lot of us, there are tens of different communication channels, meetings and thoughts pulling at our minds 24 hours a day and it is difficult to imagine a world where there would be a different reality. This often makes us feel like we do 'just fine' with constantly switching tasks and some might say they even _thrive_ when multi-tasking (I was one of these people).
But for me, ultimately it has completely _shot_ my concentration. After 15+ years of this, when I _need_ to focus, I struggle to do so for more than half an hour at a time, if that. This is ***not conducive to longer term, thoughtful work or learning new complex skills***.
The anecdotal evidence or people-based experiments _never convinced me_, but as I was reading ['Deep Work'](https://amzn.to/2zmkBal), Cal Newport explained the ***science behind single-tasking to become an expert*** and this made more sense to me than anything else on this topic so it had to be shared somewhere:
+ Neuroscientists now believe that ***myelin*** is the key to allowing you to think through hard topics faster
+ Myelin "is a layer of fatty tissue that grows around neurons, acting like an insulator that allows cells to fire faster and cleaner"
+ The science of performance notes that you improve in a skill _as_ more myelin develops around the neurons relevant to it
+ Myelin is _created_ by cells called oligodendrocytes, which are triggered by repeated use of a specific circuit
+ When a specific skill is practiced ***in isolation***, oligodendrocytes begin to wrap the _relevant_ cells with myelin, **"effectively cementing the skill"**
The key here is that **if you're trying to do something complex but are in a scattered state of concentration, you're firing _too many different circuits_ for one to be isolated and strengthened with myelin**.
