dotnet format style does not work in gitlab pipeline

Hello,
I would like to introduce code style checking into our gitlab pipeline, however when I use `dotnet format style "path/to/project.sln" --verify-no-changes` no issues are reported even though I am sure there is at least one style issue. Running this command locally over the same repository does indeed show an issue exactly where I expect it to. Am I missing something here?

And finally here is what my incorrectly formatted code (that I expect to be reported by dotnet format style) looks like

int a = 0;
if (false)

```

I would expect `csharp_prefer_braces = true` to be triggered by this which does work locally but when I run it inside the pipeline no error is thrown.

Running `dotnet format` (without style) works and does report some other issues if they are present, for instance using tabs instead of spaces but it won't report csharp_prefer_braces.

Can someone help me please?
