Need to know how to get ip address of the hosting Mac

This article simply says to use the ip address of the hosting Mac machine. But nowadays each computer can have a number of virtual network adapters displayed in the result of `ifconfig`. So exactly which one should be used? Or we should use some other command to get the ip address required to use in this particular scenario.
