Show the monitor numbers or other labels while selecting the layout for a monitor(s)

Hi,

My issue is related to having two physical workspaces with dual monitors setup. I have to adjust the layout setting to the appropriate monitors at the new location because it may already be selected for a previous setup.

The solution is to name/number the monitors while selecting the layout in the drop-down menu. How to make it easy to use, is a good question. The simplest way is to number each monitor both on the monitor's screen whuke the activating the drop-down menu, and to use the same numbering in the selection menu itself. There could be other fancy ways to show the selection of the layout vs the monitor, may be flashing the monitor while hover mouse other the monitor selection in the menu.

And it will be nice to have an option to keep the drop-down menu while selecting a layout. The idea is to select two layouts and then click on the area outside the drop-down menu to close it. Just imagine, if I have no idea which one was the monitor in the drop-down list (both named the same by the GNOME Desktop), so I have to make a selection, and then if it is wrong, go back to the menu and make the selection again, and then come back to the drop-down menu once more and make the selection for the second monitor. Well, I am using virtual spaces, so it has to be repeated eventually in other spaces. Keeping the drop-down menu will help to minimize the hassle.

I suspect there would be ways to update the saved names of those monitors somewhere in the DCONF. It is not straightforward but may be a workaround at least. Hmmm, may be giving the monitors editable aliases directly in the drop-down menu, could be a the simplest solution!
