`container.put_archive` fails with a timeout when `path` doesn't exist in container

Description
When calling container.put_archive with a path that doesn't exist in the container the operation fails only after the defined timeout duration, instead of immediately with an informative message.
Steps to reproduce:
container.put_archive('/i/dont/exist', data)
