Research direction

Reproduce the reported test errors from the linked gist in a fresh corner installation using Python 3.6.0, matplotlib 2.0.2, and nosetests 1.3.7. Start by reading the failure details in the gist and running the test suite; done means the reported errors are resolved and the tests pass with those versions.
