## Background
Collaboration between ASU professors Hannah Kerner and Ana Tarano, and Development Seed to investigate if geospatial foundation models can offer an improvement over current cropland monitoring + area estimation for NASA Harvest and FEWS NET

## Goals
Investigate if geospatial foundation models can offer an improvement over current cropland monitoring + area estimation.
Foundation Models to Evaluate: Presto, Olmo Earth, Tessera (based lite embeddings generated April to April).
Geographic Areas: Sudan (2025-2026 growing season), Tigray (historical), Togo (historical + current growing season), [test set data](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-024-03306-z) in sub saharan Africa regions (Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Rwanda, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia)
**Methods Mini Summary**
* explore if outputs of geospatial foundation models offer performance gains (in terms of F1), while balancing cost + time to run over baseline
* areas to explore: embeddings + random forest classification, embeddings + CatBoost, embeddings + fine-tuning
**Outputs**:
* github repo with repeatable workflow and tooling for the community (Dev Seed lead)
* Technical Paper summarizing evaluation (ASU lead)
* Blog Post summarizing evaluation + tooling built (Dev Seed lead)
