Strange highlighting with Latex

I'm using vimtex with ale and coc, and I followed the guide to setup the integration. The linting itself is working fine and displaying messages, but the highlighting is completely off where it should be.
Only single characters are highlighted, and they're not even where the errors are. In this case, the area near my cursor should be highlighted. For comparison, I intentionally misspelled a word to demonstrate what highlights usually look like.
