Description
Is there an existing issue for this?
- I checked and did not find my issue in the already reported ones
Describe the bug
Guide lines disappear in darkroom (typically modules "crop", "rotate and perspective") and can only be made to re-appear by closing application and restarting. If I continue working in darkroom, e.g., rotating, darktable hangs or crashes with segmentation fault. The bug appears seemingly randomly, i.e., cannot be reproduced deterministically. When cropping a large batch of photos, it typically requires restart for about every third photo.
Steps to reproduce
Cannot be reproduced deterministically, but something like this:
- Enter darkroom. ,
- Rotate
- Crop
- Advance to next photo
... repeat until guide lines disappear and cannot be re-activated, and darktable crashes if not restarted immediately.
Expected behavior
Darktable should show guide lines and not hang or crash

Where did you obtain darktable from?
distro packaging
darktable version
5.4.1
What OS are you using?
Linux
What is the version of your OS?
Ubuntu 24.04.04 LTS
Describe your system
I have experienced this problem ever since starting using Darktable several years ago, always on Ubuntu on HP Laptops, but different versions of Ubuntu and of darktable, and different laptops. The current has 32 GB of memory. As for GTK+, I have 3.24.41-4ubuntu1.3, so I suppose Darktable links with that.
Are you using OpenCL GPU in darktable?
None
If yes, what is the GPU card and driver?
No response
Please provide additional context if applicable. You can attach files too, but might need to rename to .txt or .zip
. I have experienced this problem with every darktable version since I started using darktable a few years ago.
. I work only in RAW. Trying with JPEG, it seems that the problem does not appear, or at least not as frequently.
. Once the problem appears (guide lines disappears), I can't seem to fix it except by restarting.
. I do not use lua scripts
. Yes, the problem also appears when running darktable --configdir "/tmp"

Research direction
Start with the attached darktable_bt_VVYAP3.txt backtrace and the darkroom sequence involving crop, rotate and perspective. Investigate the reported behavior with RAW files on darktable 5.4.1 and Ubuntu 24.04, including a clean --configdir run. Done means guide lines remain visible and the sequence no longer hangs or crashes with a segmentation fault.
