Encountering strange freezes

Describe the bug

I have been trying out Darktable to consider switching eventually switching from Rawtherapee due to the much faster development pace here but I am running into loads of stability issues. The user interface seems to soft-freeze in some strange way where tooltips still work but I can't click on anything (and Gnome does not report the app as not responding, most notably). The issue has been noted both on 5.2 using the Flatpak version (without OpenCL because of it not working there) and using the 5.4 AppImage with OpenCL. How long it takes for the freeze to happen depends but it seems to happen once I start editing. Sometimes it even freezes when trying to load an image from the lighttable.

Steps to reproduce

1. Open Darktable
2. Import a list of CR2 files
3. Start editing a file
4. Notice that the user interface freezes with working...

The only potentially relevant in the terminal output is this:

Are you using OpenCL GPU in darktable?

Yes

If yes, what is the GPU card and driver?

Intel Arc Graphics as built in to the 155H cpu. Driver isintel-compute-runtime available in the Fedora repo. However, as noted above, this was also the case without OpenCL in 5.2 through Flatpak.

Likely not OpenCL related as noted above. Seems like a deadlock on some thread but some kind of UI thread is still alive responding to stuff?

No source file or test is named. Start by reproducing the freeze in darktable 5.4 with imported CR2 files, editing, and lighttable loading on Fedora Silverblue; compare the OpenCL and non-OpenCL setups and review the terminal warning alongside the screencast. Done means the cause is isolated and the reported workflow no longer freezes.
