# Description

The start announcement a screen-reader makes when navigating to a fraction while editing a math expression in the Equation Editor is confusing. The Equation Editor presents structures for four types of fractions: ("Stacked Fraction", "Skewed Fraction", "Linear Fraction", and "Small Fraction"):

The Fractions dropdown menu from the Structures group on the Equation tab of the Word ribbon

During the demo we received (in the MS Word Version 2511) the "Stacked Fraction" was being announced as "Start denominator fraction". "denominator fraction" was confusing because each fraction has a "start denominator" container in it. The "Skewed Fraction" and "Linear Fraction" had the same start announcement thus cannot be distinguished by speech alone. The "Small Fraction" was announced as "Start box" thus it's unclear that a fraction and what type follows.

# Recommendation

The DAISY group's initial reaction was to recommend that the stacked fraction simply be announced as "Start fraction" since it is most common. The other three should be announced using the names given to them in the Structures group on the Equation tab in the ribbon:

| Fraction Structure | Start Announcement |
| :---: | :---: |
| Stacked Fraction | Start fraction |
| Skewed Fraction | Start skewed fraction |
| Linear Fraction | Start linear fraction |
| Small Fraction | Start small fraction |

Research direction

Start by reproducing the screen-reader announcements while navigating each fraction structure in the Equation Editor: Stacked, Skewed, Linear, and Small. Compare the current announcements with the recommendation in the issue. Done means speech alone identifies each structure as “Start fraction,” “Start skewed fraction,” “Start linear fraction,” or “Start small fraction.”
