Description

Many images on the page have alt-text that is inadequate to provide the equivalent benefit for a non-visual reader. For example:

- Images for 212 symbols (out of the 257) contain the alt-text: “Mathematical symbol" in the table listing the Math AutoCorrect codes” (in the "Automatically convert expressions to professional format" section).
- In the section entitled “UnicodeMath editing examples”, the following image contains the alt-text “image showing the resolved version of an equation array” when the key information presented is more adequately described by "The following three equations are horizontally aligned on three separate lines at the equal sign: First equation: x plus 1 equals 2. Second equation: 1 plus 2 plus 3 plus y equals z. Third equation: 3 divided by x equals 6.":
![The following three equations are horizontally aligned on three separate lines at the equal sign: First equation: x plus 1 equals 2. Second equation: 1 plus 2 plus 3 plus y equals z. Third equation: 3 divided by x equals 6.](https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/3b858758-b0b7-4dbf-aca5-86f172ecb7fd)

Also, in the section entitled “UnicodeMath editing examples”, the table (showing Vectors, Boxed formula, Brackets, etc.) similarly describes the images in the right-hand column in generalities rather than describing the image in detail to the reader. One example is shown below, where the alt-text for the image at the right is simply, “Image showing up a built-up equation with brackets and separators.”
![A row of Microsoft's table is shown describing how to create brackets with separators in UnicodeMath format. The given Unicode input is {a/b\vbarx+y\vbar}. The output, from left to right, is a left curly brace, followed by the fraction a over b, then a vertical bar, then the expression x plus y, then another vertical bar, then an empty box, and finally a right curly brace.](https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/0c9f81b9-4f13-44ec-8d19-760ba1ccf3b6)

Research direction

Start at the Math Support Page, especially the “Automatically convert expressions to professional format” and “UnicodeMath editing examples” sections, and review the image alt-text in the symbol table and examples table. Done means each image has alt-text that communicates its relevant mathematical content and layout to a non-visual reader, rather than a generic description.
