Should links to extended descriptions be verbose?

We are finding that a image or a text link to an extended description following the image is the best approach for providing the longer descriptions. When a screen reader encounters such a link, it will let the reader know that this is a link. However, when Read Aloud is used, it is uncertain that the Read Aloud function would announce that there are links. One would think that announcing all links would be too much verbosity. Yet, we think that the reader will want to know that there is a link to a long description. It would be a burdon on authors to write the text in the anchor or in the alt text to indicate that this is a link. We do not yet have a solid way to indicate the semantics that this is a link to an extended description. Love to hear people's thoughts about this issue.
