Read aloud should ignore some content to provide a better experience

Some content can get in the way of a pleasant read aloud experience, such as the numbers used as references (linking to footnotes/endnotes).

There could be a test in an advanced book to check whether it is possible to listen to the publication without the reference numbers being announced (in the same way that a human reading aloud would typically omit this material). There may be other content that should also be left out by read aloud.

The read aloud feature in VitalSource Bookshelf offers the choice of Simplified and Detailed Reading Modes. At the time of writing this is the only reading app the provides this functionality.

Start by locating the advanced book used for accessibility tests and review how its reference numbers and other content are represented. Check the existing read-aloud-related test coverage, then define a focused test for omitting reference numbers and document what a reading system must announce or leave out.
