Need 3D Model support in tactile graphics Use Case

Clearly, 3D models can be a wonderful tactile experience for a blind person. These 3D model file types should be supported.

Problem statement: 3D models may be the ultimate tactile experience for a blind user, but what place do they have in a enhanced braille format used for consumption on a dynamic tactile display or for embossing?

First, it seems reasonable to identify a 3D model file being contained in the E-Braille package. The 3D model may be referenced at a specific location in the title, and it could be used for printing.Just like other tactile graphics, a "tour" of the 3D model would be valuable to the blind person exploring the 3D object. The tour would direct the blind person to position the object and then proceed to direct them to specific features on the model and explain what that tactile feature is all about. One could envision both a traditional tactile graphic and a 3D model being referenced at the same location in the publication. The blind person could select to read the tour of the 3D version or the traditional tactile graphic.

It is also possible for a dynamic tactile display to provide a limited presentation of a 3D model, and this possibility requires more research, but should not be ruled out.
