Description

Math is read quite differently around the world. As someone who studied Math in India from teachers with varying degrees of fluency in English and now at a US university from professors of different linguistic backgrounds, there has always been some need to adapt to new vocabulary. Yet, I find it extremely helpful to personally speak and think in a consistent vocabulary. All of that to say that while MathCAT can achieve a lexicon that is clear and concise, different users will likely have their idiosyncratic Math vocabularies; because of that, I argue that customizability of rules will be the ultimate fix. I don't mind fiddling with .yaml files and rule sets, but when going through a hectic course load a quarter, a simple GUI interface seems far more appealing. Some changes I'd begin by making would be to replace "is a member of" with "in", "the real numbers" with "R", "is equal to with def above" with "defined by", and the list goes on. I envision this as comparable to NVDA's Speech Dictionaries. (If we have some way of listing out all the rules and symbols and such, we could present hose with an accompanying search field for a user to tweak to their liking. If not, just the ability to make speech replacements restricted to Math content would be beneficial too.)
