FYI, I tried a similar thing to your approach (using registerProtocolHandler in an IFrame) and hit this [bug in Firefox 43](https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1196151). I just tested your demo in [FF 44](https://nightly.mozilla.org/) and indeed it hits the same bug (it opens your “hidden” IFrame URL in a new tab).
I hope it's a bug and not a deliberate limitation, but I haven't gotten a response on there in two months.
