Description of the problem

The dropwdown menu for selecting a specific version of a package defaults to the latest version of the latest dist tag not the dist tag specified.

For, example

"dependencies": {
    "react": "alpha",
    "react-dom": "alpha",
    "react-scripts": "4.0.0"
  },

will install the latest react version released under alpha. But when hovering over the dropdown, the latest version of latest is show. When opening, the latest version of latest is selected, not the latest version of alpha.

How has this issue affected you? What are you trying to accomplish?

Trying to produce reproductions for which exact versions are required (otherwise they become outdated with time).

Research direction

Reproduce the issue from the linked sandbox, starting with its package.json dependency entries and the version dropdown. Compare the selected and displayed versions for the alpha dist tag against latest; it is done when the dropdown defaults to the specified tag's latest version.
