Description
When a manager fails, say a comparator, the error message is very bad (typically, an exception because the outcome is not a float), even if we could realize from the status code of the sandbox.

Research direction
Start by tracing how manager failures are handled and where sandbox status codes are available when a comparator fails. Done means manager errors report a meaningful cause instead of surfacing a misleading non-float exception.
