How to use the conjugate function with variables

Hello,
i'm trying to use the conjugate function in spanish, i have an array with the adverb time so i want to do this.
palabras = [[]]
palabras[0].append("Ayer")
palabras[0].append("PAST")
palabras.append([])
palabras[1].append("Yo")
palabras[1].append("SG")
print conjugate('correr', palabras[0][1], 1, SG )
When i run the code i just get None, when i replace palabras[][] with PAST it works and shows "corría". I think it can be for the String data type, when i use print conjugate('correr',"PAST", 1, SG ) it also does not work, How can i make this work?
