function lexeme return different types of items in list

Description
with pattern 2.6 Python 2.7.10 OSX.
I was trying to get a word's possible forms:
>>>from pattern.en import lexeme
>>>
>>>lexeme('excellent')
>>>['excellent', 'excellents', 'excellenting', 'excellented'] # this return str
>>>
>>>lexeme('baby')
>>>[u'baby', u'babies', u'babying', u'babied'] # this return unicode
lexeme returns different types of items.
is it designed to be like this or am i using this function in a wrong way?
