### As someone interested in starting an urban farm or garden and selling the food I grow, I want to make sure I'm following local laws so I don't get shut down after putting in all the work.

**Describe the content debt.**

This is a service page for now but it's really a guide.

Assumption (not explicitly stated on this page but implied): these steps are not required to legally start and operate an urban farm or garden, they're just required to sell food grown or produced on that urban farm or garden. (If so, link to content about how to start an urban farm or garden.)

If your farm or garden is 0-5 acres, you need to:

1. Get a site plan exemption. (several steps)
2. Apply for a building permit. (this is its own guide, or maybe several depending on what you need the permit for)
3. Receive a certificate of compliance once you get a building permit. (what do you do with it?)
4. Follow an Integrated Pest Management Plan. (this is a [bespoke online form](https://www.austintexas.gov/watershed_protection/growgreen/ipmapp.cfm) currently)
5. Follow water conservation rules for watering in accordance with Chapter 6-4 of the City Code. (What does this mean?)
6. Make sure there's a dwelling on site if you want to raise livestock.
7. Maintain the residential character of neighborhood on your lot. (How does someone do this?)

- What is a site plan exemption and why do I need one?
- "Apply for a Site Plan Exemption. This changes the land-use designation from single-family to urban farm."
- Besides being able to sell food, is anything else affected by changing a property's land-use designation? What about taxes?
- Why does this say "urban farm" if it also applies to garden markets?
- What if I don't want to sell food on my urban farm or garden, I just want to make sure I'm legally operating one? Where do I find that info?
- What if my site area is more than 5 acres but I want to sell the food I grow on it? What do I do then?
- Do I have to show anyone a certificate of compliance once I get a building permit?
- Under Guidelines: "Maintain the residential character of neighborhood on your lot." How does someone do this?
- Is this site plan exemption form up to date?
