Community activity is important to assess to determine whether activity is increasing, decreasing, or holding steady. For a project, this can help determine when you might need to get more people involved. As a contributor, I might be more or less interested in participating in a project that is very active. As a consumer of an open source project, I want to know whether a project is active or declining.
