As part of their changes to improve the story for geometries, mysql added the information_schema.ST_GEOMETRY_COLUMNS table which stores various useful bits of info like SRID, shape, etc, which is not available in the regular information_schema.COLUMNS table.

Research direction

No file or test is named. Start by locating the MySQL schema-introspection code that reads information_schema.COLUMNS, then compare its geometry handling with MySQL 8's ST_GEOMETRY_COLUMNS table; done means geometry metadata such as SRID and shape is returned for geometry columns.
