Description
Instead of defining a specific model-driven approach and UML profile for the IFC UML model, the IFC model can be described within the existing approach defined by ISO/TC 211 for the GIS application domain. The ISO/TC 211 approach is based on general MDA and UML concepts and adapted for modelling of geospatial information. This would improve the possibilities for closer integration with the GIS application domain and enable implementation of IFC in technologies for both BIM and GIS.
We have discussed the issue of implementation of IFC as ISO/TC 211 compliant UML models in a newly published article: https://www.mdpi.com/2220-9964/9/4/278.

Research direction
The issue names no repository files or tests. Start by reading the linked article and comparing its ISO/TC 211 MDA/UML approach with the existing IFC UML model; a concrete scope, affected artifacts, and acceptance criteria are needed before implementation can be considered done.
