Tag 1.6.x patch release?

Using this in my project for the first time, I found that a small fix I wanted to apply was already merged on master -- but no release tag has been applied since 2021.

I'd suggest tagging master so normal users (like me) can benefit from all the changed from recent years!

Review the changes on master since the last release and check the repository's existing tag and release conventions. Confirm the intended 1.6.x version, then verify that the release tag points to the appropriate master commit and makes the merged fixes available to users.
