Opt/alt as esc not working as expected?

Looked all over for an existing answer but cannot seem to find one. In blink config the option to map alt/opt to esc doesn’t seem to do anything or at least it’s not working as I expect it to in my typical use. IE connected to remote host in Vi hitting alt/opt on an apple Smart Keyboard is not sending esc.

Typical use is blink mosh->remote server shell->tmux then using all command line apps/editors/Vi thru tmux.

Any idea what’s going wrong or am I completely missing the point of what the alt/opt to esc mapping is supposed to do?

Start by reproducing the Alt/Option-to-Escape behavior in Blink config with an Apple Smart Keyboard, then test the described mosh-to-remote-shell-to-tmux-to-Vi workflow. Done means establishing whether the mapping sends Escape through that workflow and documenting or correcting the observed behavior.
