Description

Steps To Reproduce

Windows 11 PC with desktop app installed and set to start and run minimized on Windows boot. Bitwarden extension installed in Firefox. Bitwarden details as follows:

Version 2025.11.2
SDK 'main (8ef7951)'
Shell 37.7.0
Renderer 138.0.7204.251
Node 22.20.0
Architecture x64

  1. Boot up PC
  2. Start Firefox
  3. Let Firefox run for an hour, maybe less
  4. Click on Bitwarden extension icon
Expected Result

I expect Bitwarden to solicit my fingerprint to unlock the browser extension with biometrics. It does this if I attempt to unlock it immediately upon starting Firefox.

Actual Result

Bitwarden requires "Unlock with Master Password" instead of soliciting fingerprint.

Additional Context

To be clear: The desktop app is running in the background and I was logged in. (The app is locked.) The “Require master password…” is unchecked. Then, if I start Firefox and let it run awhile (I had it running for almost two hours) and then try to unlock the extension, I did not get the option to unlock with biometrics. When I closed Firefox, immediately re-opened it, and immediately tried to unlock the extension, I could do so via biometrics.

So, the point is, the functionality “works” if I try to unlock the extension in Firefox right away, but it goes away if I wait awhile.

Research direction

No source file or test is named. Start by reproducing the behavior across the Windows desktop app and Firefox extension after Firefox has been running for an extended period, then trace their biometric unlock interaction. Done means the extension still offers fingerprint unlock after the browser has been open for a while, while preserving the immediate-start behavior.
