Updating devcards dependencies

I tried making a new devcards application, upgrading everything in sight naively, and seeing if it worked. It did not work for me (though there's plenty of places my own dev environment could be janky). I'm going spend a little time upgrading things one by one to see if that gives me information on why. I am posting this as an issue in case I should help in a different way.

Start by reproducing that upgrade attempt and identify which dependency change causes the failure. Done would require a defined, working dependency update with the failure and verification steps documented.
