**Additional Context**
- BCWS Forecasters issue about 10 venting forecast everyday from November to the end of January. The forecast is based upon a coordinate point location and an elevation. Two to three forecasters spend up to three hours per day building these forecasts. We feel that this product can be automated.
- ECCC issues a graphical Ventilation Index forecast within Animet: [https://eccc-msc.github.io/msc-animet/?layers=HRDPS.CONTINENTAL_CVI;0.75;0;1;0;1_02JTraDM&extent=-15931836,4671968,-6515771,9380000&overlays=Boundaries&range=47,7,l,PT1H](https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Feccc-msc.github.io%2Fmsc-animet%2F%3Flayers%3DHRDPS.CONTINENTAL_CVI%3B0.75%3B0%3B1%3B0%3B1_02JTraDM%26extent%3D-15931836%2C4671968%2C-6515771%2C9380000%26overlays%3DBoundaries%26range%3D47%2C7%2Cl%2CPT1H&data=05%7C02%7CNicolas.Livanos%40gov.bc.ca%7C2e2e0ccb0a9f43a2b84808df0869a498%7C6fdb52003d0d4a8ab036d3685e359adc%7C0%7C0%7C639238922576360586%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=pPouBu%2BwZ3kaZ4TUsVkhfHeovcREmQgj1RGXClO2A%2FA%3D&reserved=0)
- The same layer is also available in GRIB format: [20260901T12Z_MSC_HRDPS_VI_Sfc_RLatLon0.0225_PT001H.grib2](https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdd.weather.gc.ca%2Ftoday%2Fmodel_hrdps%2Fcontinental%2F2.5km%2F12%2F001%2F20260901T12Z_MSC_HRDPS_VI_Sfc_RLatLon0.0225_PT001H.grib2&data=05%7C02%7CNicolas.Livanos%40gov.bc.ca%7C2e2e0ccb0a9f43a2b84808df0869a498%7C6fdb52003d0d4a8ab036d3685e359adc%7C0%7C0%7C639238922576375567%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=JsTVhyd6JlWPJyAoPTTXR1fWF2QurNpUBpVvqDJ0cNk%3D&reserved=0)
- WE also know that BC ENV provides an automated text version of the same forecast (Gaeille says too optimistic): [Ventilation Index](https://envistaweb.env.gov.bc.ca/aqo/files/bulletin/venting.html)
- ENV Playground: https://firesmoke.ca/playground/
- ENV R scripts location: https://bcgov.sharepoint.com/:f:/r/teams/01324/Shared%20Documents/General/_Innovation%20Sprints/Innovation%20Sprints/2026-Jan/Smurfie%20Spot%20Management?d=w8adadd5afbd8463a809a24e15b0a8d32&csf=1&web=1&e=44tEM1
- It would be good to insert the ECCC public forecast in the text and include an x-y chart indicating wind speed, direction, and gust (see spotwx.com):
- The Ventilation can also be included as an hourly graphic. I’m currently not sure how to account for elevation but that’s something us forecasters will need to chat about. The BCWS Forecasted Venting values are categorized as follows: POOR: 0-33, FAIR: 34-54, GOOD 55-100.
- Gaelle feature request: Custom Venting Forecast as an option, alongside Smurfie spot + mini spot (remove the slope/aspect field, venting forecasts we do not require it; don't include T, RH; Wind and mixing height should be provided for morning and afternoon of Day 1, then once a day for days 2 and 3; template lives: https://bcgov-my.sharepoint.com/:b:/g/personal/gaelle_gilson_gov_bc_ca/IQDllnJlxd5cRpq4bFdL313MARoH86DHE-KVMUT2OukENVQ?e=QSjKf0)

Research direction
No implementation files, tests, or entry points are identified. Start by locating the existing Smurfie spot and mini spot forecast flows, then compare their inputs, access rules, and output formats with the acceptance criteria. Done means the hourly, three-day custom forecast supports forecaster editing, guest access, QA comparison, and the requested wind, mixing-height, and ventilation outputs.
