Description

A great idea to add a link to OrgBook on the Names Application, we could put a blurb indicating “research name choices here” or something like that.

Regards,

Debbie Blyth

Client suggestion:
I highly suggest BC Registries adds the OrgBook URL (https://orgbook.gov.bc.ca) to the front page of the Name Request site. If I had known about that search tool it could have saved myself and another sole proprietor a lot of stress and money because one of us would have seen the other had registered the business name both of us were planning to use. I understand that as a sole proprietor you don't have exclusive rights, but more reason to include a search tool to ensure you are choosing a name that isn't going to be used by someone in the same field two blocks away!!!

I spoke to a man at BC Registries on the phone that told me about the OrgBook tool. I had no idea it existed and the check mark/"you're good to go!" search tool on the BC Registries isn't doing any sole proprietors any favours.

This seems like a pretty simple solution that should be available for small business owners when they pay $30 to request a name and then $40 to register the business. At the very least make it possible for them to see if anyone else is using the name before they go through the trouble.

Research direction

Start by locating the Names Application's front-page UI entry point and review how existing external links are rendered. Add a visible link or short blurb pointing to https://orgbook.gov.bc.ca, then verify manually that it appears in the intended location and opens the OrgBook site.
