**Draft list of questions to send to other jurisdictions**
Start at high level
Contact registries provincially
Ask about street names
VSA jur. Scan done on people names
Use preamble to open
How to factor in American businesses
FLAG: Name policy book not external- BC has stricter naming policies and guidelines

**Questions to send to other jurisdictions:**
1) Intro/ Background: OCIO team to provide intro language, pull from other scans, website, mention Federal commitments on the aligning action item. If yes, what was the process to accept Indigenous language business names
2) Do any jurisdictions currently accept Indigenous languages for business names? If not, is there an estimated timeline?
3) Have you received any requests to include Indigenous language business names? If so, has there been any legal or human rights challenges?
4) Do you support clients that may be doing business elsewhere where the name is not recognised?
5) Do you have policies/operating procedures related to Indigenous language business names in your systems?
6) In your jurisdiction, what considerations are included (or should be included) to use an Indigenous language business name for your policies and processes? Please consider both internal and external (client-facing).
7) Have you amended legislation or regulation to support the use of Indigenous language business names in your systems?
8) Any publicly available naming policy?
**Example: Preamble from Vital Stats survey to equivalents in other Canadian jurisdictions:
Context:**
The B.C. government is working towards ensuring Indigenous languages can be used in our systems and services as committed to in the provincial Declaration Act Action, Action 3.15. Foundational ID (i.e., birth certificates and legal name changes) is the starting place for this work.
**Previous research:**
We’ve learned through desk research that some jurisdictions permit registering mononym or polynym names based on traditional culture. Supporting evidence from an Indigenous community, organization, elder or leader, a not-for-profit organization, or an academic with knowledge of the traditional culture identified is typically required.
