### 🐞 Description

I'm seeing some inconsistencies with the coloring of elements in light/dark mode.

*Light mode:*

*Dark mode:*

For reference, this is what the website search bar looks like.

*Dark mode:*

1. The search icon (magnifying glass) in the search field is a dark color in light mode but doesn't switch to a lighter color in dark mode.

2. The placeholder text in light mode seems a little too faint to be properly readable. It looks fine in the screenshot above but take a look for yourself and tell me what you think!

Research direction

Start by locating the shields.io search bar entry point and compare its light- and dark-mode rendering with the screenshots in the issue. Check the search icon and placeholder text for appropriate contrast in both modes, then verify the result manually in each theme.
