Reimplement backend API in Python

Just a thought: the API portion of this project was struggling heavily with all the Github API requests. Lets try out using another language like Python to request/parse the data and see if we get less timeouts.

Start by locating the API portion that makes GitHub API requests and review how it currently requests and parses data. The issue does not name files or tests; completion would require deciding whether a Python reimplementation reduces the reported timeouts, then verifying that the API still provides the expected data.
