Research direction

Start with the flag-combination examples in README.md and reproduce the failing commands in the reported macOS Sonoma, M1, and Kitty environment. Trace how combinations containing `spec` are parsed and verify that `spec` is treated as a flag rather than the path `spec`; done means the affected README examples run without the reported error.
