want some documentation clarification

wondering what a use case is for the `->` symbol, don't see an example, and haven't found an example config that uses it

I think you should specify that `` should be the name of an application; in the example you see a use case but it is not directly inferrable from the documentation

specify that `|` means 'or you can do this', on first glance it looks like it might be some kind of pipe

sorry for the noobish questions, can do a PR to expand the documentation if we have a disussion and you think I have the right idea
