We should default to "numba" if installed, fall back to "base" otherwise. If we add more computation alternatives we can consider them

Research direction
Locate the configuration and selection logic for stats.module, then inspect how computation alternatives are currently chosen. Check behavior when numba is installed and when it is unavailable; done means auto selects numba in the first case and base in the second, with existing alternatives still working.
